Representations of the Suffragette trailer

In the trailer for the suffragette at the beginning there is a mid shot of the women getting her child dressed and ready for the day whist her husband stands and watches, this shows that women have been represented as being housewives. This reinforces gender stereotypes because women are stereotypically expected to loo after the children when their husbands go off to work. This creates the ideology that women should stay at home and do what their husbands tells them to do. A feminist audience member may feel quite outraged about this as they believe men and women are equal however as the film is set in the past and is all about women rights a feminist audience member may feel happy that this has made it to the cinema and really reflects how far society has come.

In the trailer women has also been represented as being quite violent this is shown through a close up shot of a member of the suffragettes posting a bomb through a letter box. this subverts gender stereotypes as typically women are represented in the media as being submissive and been g the ones who like to keep peace. this creates the ideology that women should be able to be more aggressive and that they should be passionate about their rights. some audience members may feel good about this as the women is standing up for her rights but some may feel like out represents women badly as it promotes a violent protest.

Men have been represented as being quite abusive and heartless in this trailer as it shows a midshot of a policeman punching one of the Suffagettes who was protesting in the stomach. This reinforces gender stereotypes as men are stereotypically the more aggressive and violent once. This creates the ideology that is okay for men to hit and abuse women when they need they are doing something they disagree with. Audiences may feel quite taken back by this as the majority of people think that the abuse of women is completely wrong and disgusting the male audience member may feel quite ashamed that in the past men thought that it was okay to do that to a woman.

Another way women have been represented in this trailer as being resilience and very passionate. this is shown through a shot of the a suffragettes little boy being taken away from her because of her work for women rights. this subverts gender stereo types and women are expected to give in and crumble the it comes to their children and they are typically very maternal and would do anything for their child and to keep them safe, so the fact that she still tough for her rights after her little boy was taken fro her shows how strong women are. this creates the ideology that women should fight for their rights and stay strong through everything. the female audience members may feel quite moved by this as it shows what sacrifices the women in the past did to get the rights women have now.
