representations of age in the media
Age is represented in a number of ways in the media I will be looking at how the media represent young people i.e. teens and young adults. and I will also be looking at how the media represent older people meaning people aged 50 plus. I will be looking at the representation sin the trailer for the film "Dirty Grandpa".
In this trailer young people are shown to be represented as being reckless and carefree as there is a close up shot of Zac Effron smoking weed whilst at a party. This shows that the media views young people as not being very responsible and seem to not car very much about the law. This creates the ideology that young people should break the law and not take rules in to consideration. This is a quite negative representation of young people as not all young people take part and go to these parties and do get on with work and are responsible young adults. As this negative representation is reoccurring in the media older people think of young people as actually being like this, therefore effecting the relationship between the younger generation and older generation, this representation can also effect young people lives as if they are looking for work some employers may stereotype all young people as being like this and may choose to employ people who are slightly older and have "grown up". another way it effects young people is their relationship with their parents as their parents may find it harder to trust them as they think they are going to be out doing all the negative things that younger people are represented as.
however this trailer subverts the stereotypes of older people as Robert De Nero who plays the grandpa has been shown to be taking part in all the activity that you would expect the younger people to be doing. This can be viewed as both negative and positive, it can be viewed as positive as it ma make the older audience feel like they are young again and can still have loads of fun even though they are getting older it also may make them feel very nostalgic as they could feel like they are reliving their teenage years. however it can be viewed as negative as people could argue it shows older people like they cant let go and move on with their life, as stereotypically older people especially grandparents should stereotypically stay at home be loving and kind and not do anything out of the ordinary.
